History and story
Gonio–Apsaros is a Roman-period defensive site; the official regional tourism source dates it to the 1st century AD. Its strategic position guarded routes into the Chorokhi and Acharistskali valleys. Byzantine and Ottoman forces later used it. It should not be presented as a fortress founded by Queen Tamar.
